Brexit could bring more uncertainty for EU ETS

The possibility of ‘Brexit’ is raising questions about the UK’s future participation in the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS).

The legal text of the ETS makes no mention of a scenario under which an EU member state withdraws from the system. It is also unclear if the UK would want – or be forced – to withdraw from the ETS in the event that it decides to leave the EU.
