Russia has no credible alternative to the EU for its gas exports as huge uncertainties hang over routes to other destinations, a former EU energy commissioner has said.

Andris Piebalgs – who served as the European Commission’s representative for energy between 2004 and 2010 – said in a recent policy brief written for the Florence School of Regulation that infrastructure planned to bring Russian gas to China beyond 2020 may not be built.
