Reserves
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. estimates the country's gas reserves at 5.2 trillion cubic metres. The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists has claimed Nigeria’s gas reserves have remained stagnant over the past six years. Layi Fatona, managing director of Niger Delta Petroleum Resources, said Nigeria is not discovering new gas because of a lack of exploration activities.
Funding for gas infrastructure, such as pipelines and power plant, has been constrained and is a key reason for the stagnation in exploration. Security is also an issue as the gas reserves are mostly located in the Niger Delta, which has been a target of sabotage and attacks.
