Additional information
The first LNG plant to start operations in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Bonny Island LNG plant has become an important source of supply to the global LNG industry.
The plant has three condensate storage tanks with a total capacity of 108 thousand cubic metres (Mcm). It has a production capacity of 4 mtpa of LPG and four 65 Mcm LPG refrigerated storage tanks. There are 10 generators with a total capacity of 400 MW on site. The facility has two LNG export jetties and one LPG and condensate jetty.
Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC), Shell Petroleum Development Co. (SPDC), Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd (EPNL) and Phillips Oil Co. Nigeria all have supply rights for feedstock gas to the Nigeria LNG plant on Bonny Island. Total supply requirements of the facility are 99 million cubic metres of gas per day. Major fields supplying the plant include Soku, BNAG, Awoba, Cawthorne Channel and Bonga, operated by SPDC; Obite, Ibewa, Obagi, Amenam and Akpo, operated by EPNL; and Mbede and Obiafu-Obrikom operated by Nigeria Agip Oil Co.
Nigeria LNG has a wholly owned subsidiary – Bonny Gas Transport (BGT) – which provides shipping services. Combined, Nigeria LNG and BGT own or operate 24 LNG ships.
The Bonny LNG complex has suffered interruptions because of shutdowns at the Soku gas processing plant in Rivers state, resulting from attacks on its connecting pipelines. The attacks are continuing, with SPDC declaring force majeure on supplies multiple times in 2013.
