Imports/Exports

Nigeria is the world’s fifth-largest exporter of LNG. Exports have been limited by available supply, which has been disrupted by attacks on infrastructure.

Nigeria is well placed to supply the Atlantic Basin, but demand has fallen in response to the shale gas production in the United States and economic stagnation in Europe, forcing it to find alternative markets. The largest recipients of Nigerian LNG were Japan and South Korea in 2013, revealing a shift to Asia.

The US, Nigeria’s previous top customer, has declined in importance because of the shale gas boom. LNG exports were just 0.1 bcm in 2013, compared to 4.1 bcm in 2010.
