Production & Consumption
When operating at capacity the Angolan LNG facility will use 28.3 million cubic metres of gas per day and 3.5 million cubic metres per day will be made available for the domestic market in the area around Soyo, according to Angola LNG’s website. The majority of this will be associated gas produced with oil, which will be seperated and transported to the LNG plant.
If not used for LNG the gas will be flared or re-injected. Angola flared approximately 4.1 billion cubic metres of gas in 2011, according to figures from the World Bank, and unknown volumes are used for reinjection to enhance oil recovery. The country has significant reserves of gas and the potential to produce it, but lacks a domestic market.
The country delivered its first LNG exports in 2013. The Angola LNG plant was intended to export to the American market, but the production of shale gas has largely removed that demand. European demand has also been low. The majority of the plants output is delivered to the Asian and South American markets.
