A transition to renewable energy and better energy efficiency in south Mediterranean countries (SMCs) – including Egypt, Morocco and Algeria – could improve the economic stability of those countries while safeguarding the security of Europe’s gas supply, according to a recent report released by Brussels-based thinktank Bruegel.
The report points out that energy demand in SMCs has been continuously rising since the early 1990s and that there is a danger these countries could become net importers of gas unless their renewables potential is fully exploited.
