The seventh cargo of LNG from Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass plant in the United States arrived at Portugal’s Port of Sines in late April, making it the first US cargo to reach Europe. Although Europe is well supplied with gas, Brussels hopes American LNG will help reduce dependence on Russian gas in the future.

With five US LNG export plants under construction and more in the planning stage, the EU’s wish could come true. Andrew Walker, international vice president of Cheniere Energy, told a debate in the European Parliament this week that the US could become the world’s third-largest exporter of LNG by 2020 and the largest by 2025.
