A deadly Islamic State assault on a Baghdad gas plant earlier this month highlighted the vulnerably of Iraq’s gas sector. Three storage tanks were set on fire and at least 11 people were killed.

Iraq’s lack of security has obstructed efforts to develop non-associated gas fields, such as the Akkas field in the western province of Anbar and the Mansuriya field in the eastern region of Diyala. These are two of the three gas fields included in a 2010 bidding round.
