Poland may finally give up on its shale gas dream next month if a new test by state-owned PGNiG fails to indicate commercial flows. But the news is not as catastrophic as it once would have been for the Russian-gas-dependent country, with supply alternatives now in place and its eastern contract price much reduced.

Testing is scheduled to begin at PGNiG’s Stara Kiszewa concession area in northern Pomerania on 6 June and go on for approximately a week. If results are poor then PGNiG will view the shale project as finished, recently appointed company Chief Executive Piotr Wozniak told newspaper Puls Biznesu this week.
