Nord Stream 2 a concern for Yamal, not just Ukraine

The European Commission has long voiced concerns that the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline could sideline Ukraine as a transit country for Russian gas after 2020. However, more recently it has also said that supplies through the Yamal pipeline – which crosses Poland and Belarus – could also be jeopardised.

"Nord Stream 2 could lead to decreasing gas transportation corridors […] abandoning the route through Ukraine and also the German route via Poland could be endangered. Such a reduction of routes will not improve security of supply," the EU commissioner for climate change and energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, told a plenary debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week.
