Gazprom has picked up the Interconnector Turkey-Greece-Italy (ITGI) gas pipeline project in a move that may be as much about blocking the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) as creating a new southern export route to deliver Russian gas to Europe.
The ITGI project – which has the support of and funding from the EU – had planned to export gas from Azerbaijan but was rejected in favour of other southern gas corridor projects, including TAP. The Turkish element is under question because of ongoing tension between Moscow and Ankara.
