EU’s import dependence is hard nut to crack

The disruptions in the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine in 2006 and 2009 have not been forgotten by EU policymakers, who are striving to diversify the region’s imports and save energy.

EU Commissioner for Climate and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete highlighted the risk of over-reliance on Russian gas when he presented the EU’s new supply security package to MEPs in the European Parliament this week.
