The Nord Stream 2 project has caused controversy and concern with Poland and the United States being vocal opponents. Both countries fear increasing European dependence on Russian exports.

A consortium of Gazprom, BASF/Wintershall, E.On, Engie, OMV and Shell will build the planned pipeline, which will run from Russia to Germany across the bottom of the Baltic Sea and have an annual capacity of 55 billion cubic metres.
