When Italy’s former Prime Minister Romano Prodi turned down a position that would have seen him chair the South Stream project company back in 2008 it came as a surprise to many.
Prodi had been seen as a natural fit for the project after supporting its development while in office and enjoying a warm relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. His German counterpart Gerhard Schroeder had taken on a similar role at Nord Stream, paving the way for its completion three years later and setting a precedent for former statesmen taking the helm at major Gazprom projects.
