Hungary’s goodbye to coal will likely be a long one despite pledges made by Hungarian President Janos Ader at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on Tuesday.

Similar to Greece, where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced his country’s intention to exit coal by 2028, Ader said coal would be phased out in Hungary by 2030. However, government policies and plans indicate the country’s coal use may be squeezed – but not completely gone – by that date.
