South Africa’s proposal in late August to drop plans to build 9.6 GW of nuclear capacity by 2026 is expected to benefit gas and renewables. Under its draft Integrated Resource Plan, the government wants to add 2.50 GW of hydropower capacity by 2030 in addition to 5.67 GW of solar capacity, 8.10 GW of wind capacity, 8.10 GW of gas-fired capacity and 1.00 GW of coal-fired capacity. Coal remains the dominant fuel in South Africa, accounting for around 88% of its power generation in 2017.
