Energy companies have long argued that natural gas is a clean fuel compared with coal and should be seen as part of the solution to the problem of climate change. However, environmental activists typically argue that natural gas is itself a cause of global warming. Such groups say gas can be taken seriously as part of the solution only if it is used in tandem with other fuels, such as hydrogen, that do not release carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
