Brazil’s gas sector once again finds itself in a state of flux. The government wants to weaken the monopoly of state-owned Petrobras over the country’s oil and gas sector, and its Novo Mercado de Gas – or New Gas Market – initiative is intended to do just that. The proposed measures go hand-in-hand with gas sector projects being built. Nevertheless, there is a lack of political consensus around several of these measures, bringing into question their effective and timely implementation.
