Ukraine and Russia edge toward legal showdown

Gazprom and Naftogaz are at loggerheads in Stockholm’s arbitration court, but whatever the result it seems the Russian company will find an alternative supply route.

Ukraine’s leadership is hoping the International Court of Arbitration will rule in its favour before the end of the year in Naftogaz Ukrainy’s lawsuit against Gazprom. But however the lawsuit is resolved, it is unlikely to deter the Russian company from finding an alternative supply route by the end of the decade.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said last week that, although he did not want to go too far, he hoped "that the court will make relevant decisions in our favour before the end of this year".
