A new leftist coalition government is taking shape in Italy, with climate and environmental policy set to be one of its priorities.
The populist Five Star Movement (M5S) and the socialist Democratic Party (PD) agreed on Thursday to form a government after Italy’s recent political crisis prompted Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to resign. The new coalition pushes Matteo Salvini’s nationalist and climate-sceptic Lega party to the sidelines, which could pave the way for a faster deployment of renewable energy in Italy’s energy mix.
