Eastern Australia’s LNG sector has been taken by surprise over federal government backing for a proposal to prioritise local gas needs over LNG exports in the interconnected east coast gas market.
The proposal emerged this week when the ruling Coalition group agreed to back the opposition Centre Alliance's plans for tougher restrictions on gas exports in exchange for cross-bench support for the government’s tax legislation amendments, which would otherwise not have passed the Senate.
