North Dakota – America’s top gas flaring offender since 2012 – has become the first state to sue the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over proposed methane emission rules which are due to come into effect next month.

The state’s lawsuit, filed last week in the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, claimed the EPA’s new methane regulations were "arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion and not in accordance with law".
