Independent power producers (IPPs) looking to develop solar power projects in Africa say the World Bank’s Scaling Solar scheme could delay – or even kill off – more renewable projects than it brings online.

The $0.0602/kWh tariff offered under the first Scaling Solar tender in Zambia beat all expectations, including those of the programme’s organiser. Given the growing interest in the programme from other governments in the region, Scaling Solar is now targeting the development of 1 GW of solar power in the next three years.
