Gas demand from Europe’s leading markets is expected to grow by around 5% in 2016, faster than last year.
The UK is expected to help drive total gas demand growth from Europe’s six largest markets this year. Gas consumption in the UK will rise by around 8% in 2016, to roughly 78 billion cubic metres. Continued increases in offtake from the power sector will help drive UK gas use, pulling up regional demand. However, a mild start to winter could cap Q4 growth and limit the upside for market expansion in 2016 as a whole. Temperatures in the UK are forecast to be around or above average at the start of winter, which will limit the requirements for heating-related gas use at the start of Q4.
