Fuel economics not the only criterion for gas-to-coal switch

 

Price is not the only factor that influences gas-to-coal switching by electric utilities – as has been demonstrated recently in Georgia in the United States. The average cost of coal for electric utilities in the state fell to $3.29/MMBtu in February 2013 from $3.51/MMBtu in February 2012. Meanwhile, gas prices rose by 24% to $3.88/MMBtu during the same period.
