Convincing victories in both the upper and lower house elections mean Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured the political and legislative capital required to push through difficult structural reforms, which could include a shake-up of the country’s monopolistic power market.
Under the proposed reforms, Japan’s utilities would be forced into surrendering control of the grid, in a development which could have wide ranging implications for centralised generation, nuclear power and LNG consumption.
