Northeast Asia’s LNG imports surged at the start of the year, but the strong growth will not continue.
Japan’s LNG imports in Q1 are estimated to have risen to 24.2 mt, an increase of 6% year on year. However, LNG imports into Japan are likely to fall on an annual basis in Q2 as seasonal demand weakens and nuclear output rises. With reactors 1 and 2 at the Sendai nuclear plant scheduled to be online – along with Ikata reactor 3 and reactors 3 and 4 at the Takahama plant – Japan will see an increase in its nuclear output in Q3 compared with last year.
