EU adopts decisions on German CO2 compensation schemes

The European Commission has found a 2009 scheme aimed at compensating German metal producers for additional costs related to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is not compatible with EU law.

Meanwhile, another German carbon dioxide support scheme from 2013 for energy-intensive industries has been cleared, the commission announced this week.

The 2009 scheme would have offered €40 million ($52.4 million) in compensation to non-ferrous metal producers – including aluminium, copper and zinc producers – for higher electricity costs as a result of the EU ETS.
