Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated Nigeria’s first off-grid gas-fired power plant last week in Abia state as part of his strategy to alleviate the difficulties faced by his country’s troubled power sector.
The 9.5 MW Ariaria plant was built by Ariaria Market Energy Solutions (AMES), a private consortium sponsored by the government’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The plant will power 47,000 small businesses operating at the Ariaria International Market, a major business hub.
