
European shipowners may be unable to justify the switch to LNG-fuelled vessels without support from governments or institutions such as the EU.
Speaking at the KNect365 LNGgc conference in London on Monday, Sjaak Klap, vice president of business development at Spliethoff Group – a Dutch shipowner specialising in cargo – said the risks surrounding the future of LNG as a shipping fuel made it difficult to justify the additional capex of ordering LNG-fuelled vessels.
