Cuadrilla started hydraulic fracturing operations at its Preston New Road shale gas exploration site in Lancashire on Monday. As the first fracking to take place in the UK since 2011, the event would ordinarily have been welcomed with optimism from the industry. 

However, Cuadrilla’s experiences over the past week are indicative of the opposition frackers can still expect. Low oil prices offered a reprieve for protesters, as they caused a slump in global investment in exploration – particularly expensive unconventional drilling – but time has failed...
