China’s Shale Gas Rush

26 May — China will face its worst power shortage this summer since 2004, as the use of air conditioners increases energy demand to peak levels. To help meet surging energy demand and secure fuel supplies while lowering harmful emissions, China has fast-tracked its unconventional gas plans. On 2 May, China’s Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) announced a short-list of six firms that will participate in the first auction of eight shale gas exploration blocks.

China’s technically recoverable reserves of shale, at 1,275 tcf, are almost 50% higher than in the United States according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) in their latest assessment of 32 countries’ shale basins.
