The departure of Sauat Mynbayev from his position as Kazakhstan’s oil and gas minister, to take control of state oil and gas company Kazmunaigas (KMG) is designed to bring changes to the company and meets certain political needs in Astana. It also highlights a shortage of people to choose from and the continued influence of the country’s unofficial energy czar Timur Kulibayev.
