The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that the European Commission's approval of the UK’s capacity market should have been based on a more thorough assessment and investigation, it said on Thursday.
The commission approved the UK's capacity mechanism – which guarantees fixed payments to power plant operators to ensure security of supply – in July 2014 after it found it was compatible with EU state aid rules.
