Russian President Vladimir Putin bills himself as a man who rewards loyalty. Christophe de Margerie, who was chief executive of Total until his death in a Moscow plane crash in 2014, understood this better than most Western oil executives. A staunch critic of sanctions, de Margerie laid strong foundations for the French major in Russia – foundations that his replacement Patrick Pouyanné has built on with the development of Yamal LNG.
