The UK’s Rough gas storage facility has been closed for an extended period and its operational availability for this winter is in question.
The UK’s largest gas storage facility – the Rough depleted field – has been shut because of safety issues. Initially the facility was going to be closed for around a month, but the testing period has now been extended through to March/April 2017. However, assessments are currently being carried out to determine the potential partial availability of Rough this winter. Centrica Storage is expecting that at least four wells will be available for withdrawals from 1 November. However, the assessment period is not expected to be completed until the end of October. Consequently, the exact volumes and operational capacity which will be available from Rough this winter remains unclear.
