Country insight: UAE diversifies options as thirst for power grows

  • The demand for electricity is rising in the United Arab Emirates, and it cannot be met by domestic gas production. Consequently, the UAE is looking to increase its gas and LNG imports as well as diversify its power generation mix.
  • The UAE generates almost all of its electricity using gas. GGA estimates that gas accounted for 98% of the 112.1 TWh the country generated in 2015. The UAE’s electricity output is expected to increase by 5.5% on an annual basis in 2016.
