The United Arab Emirates is unlike other Gulf Cooperation Council countries in that it exports LNG as well as importing it. The UAE became the Gulf’s first LNG exporter in 1977, but the country may severely curtail its export capacity by the end of the decade if the market remains unfavourable. Meanwhile, the UAE is boosting its LNG and pipeline gas import capacity to meet growing domestic gas demand.
The UAE’s status as a net LNG exporter is also under pressure because its gas demand has been growing faster than its production. The country’s gas demand has increased by 3.4% per year on average between 2010 and 2015, while its output has risen by just 3.2% per year during this period.
