The Economies of Central American countries are expected to expand in the coming years, boosting the region’s electricity demand. But emphasis on renewable technology in the region means gas will not be the fuel of choice for its power sector.
The unpredictability of hydropower has caused Central America to deepen its reliance on oil products in its power-generation portfolio. However, the region is shifting its focus towards renewables because of volatility in the oil market and a greater cost-consciousness among the region’s governments. Gas has so far failed to capitalise on transitions in the fuel mix.
