The challenge

Myanmar is similar to its neighbouring countries in that it is abundant in natural resources, a large percentage of which come in the form of extensive proven reserves of offshore gas (283 billion cubic metres as of 2014). The gas export sector attracts the largest share of foreign direct investment in Myanmar. Gas production is also a key earner for Myanmar, having been valued at $3.3 billion between 2013 and 2014.
