Sinopec’s new $2 billion LNG terminal in the port city of Tianjin in northern China is set to challenge an existing nearby facility operated by China’s dominant LNG importer, China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC).

The startup of Sinopec’s 3 mtpa terminal last month marks the first time two state-owned import projects have operated in the same part of China. Sinopec’s terminal is in the Tianjin Nangang Industrial Zone, while CNOOC’s FSRU-based facility lies less than 20 km away at Nanjiang Port.
