China navigates choppy waters for LNG-fuelled ships

Chinese shipowners need to carefully weigh up whether their vessels can economically run on LNG as too many wrong decisions could sour the nascent image of LNG as a bunker fuel, industry experts have said.

Low prices for competing oil-based fuels and weak growth in the shipping sector have damaged the prospects for LNG as a maritime fuel in China. In these difficult circumstances, shipowners need to be convinced that making the leap to LNG will benefit their business – and picking the right vessel will be key.
