Retrofits may be the key to US coal’s longevity

Cheap gas prices in the United States and the potential introduction of stronger emissions standards via the country’s proposed Clean Power Plan are increasing pressure on coal producers to make carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) commercially viable.
CCUS is the next step from traditional carbon capture and storage, and is intended as a method of enhancing oil recovery. Of the several CCUS schemes under development in the US, one project scheduled to start up next month – a retrofit of an existing coal-fired power plant near Houston – could help coal retain its place in the country’s energy mix.
