Rosneft is poised to take a key role in developing gas distribution and export infrastructure in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, further boosting Russia’s geopolitical stake in the turbulent region ahead of a controversial independence vote.

Interfax reported on 18 September that Rosneft and the government of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region are holding talks for the Russian oil giant to participate in financing construction of a gas pipeline in Kurdistan.
