Ukraine flare-up leads to gas uncertainty

The tensions between Russia and Ukraine and the implications of the 16 March referendum in Crimea have revived fears of potential gas supply interruptions to Europe.

Russia is a key supplier of gas to Ukraine, while Ukraine is a key transit point for Russian gas flowing into Europe. The two countries have had a series of spats over gas payments since 2005, culminating in 2009 in winter gas supply interruptions to 18 European countries.
