Taiwanese state power company Taipower has retired the Chinshan 1 nuclear reactor as its licence has expired, according to Japanese newspaper The Mainichi.
It will now be decommissioned, which will take around 25 years. The decommissioning plan had involved storing the used fuel rods at an outdoor storage facility, but the company is unable to do this because of opposition from the city government of New Taipei. It therefore needs to find an alternative storage facility.
