PennEast pipeline wins backing from utility company

The 190 km PennEast pipeline project in the United States has received the support of utility South Jersey Gas.

The backing comes as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is seeking public comments on the pipeline, planned to deliver Marcellus shale gas from northeastern Pennsylvania to New Jersey.

The $1.6 billion project was granted preliminary approval by FERC, which said any environmental impact would be mitigated because one-third of the route is along existing rights of way.
