China’s coal industry is embracing expensive new technologies to help defend its large share of the energy mix against competing sources – particularly gas.

China produces and consumes almost as much coal as the rest of the world combined, but an economic slowdown has reduced the Asian country’s consumption of the fuel. 

Industry data on Wednesday showed coal output and sales fell 1-2% in the first nine months of 2014 compared with the same period last year.
