Higher output from gas-fired power plants in Europe last year was supported by lower gas prices and a rise in prices for EU carbon allowances, which penalise coal more than gas. Consequently, power generation from hard coal fell by 32% among EU states in 2019 while generation from lignite fell by 16%, according to a report by Agora Energiewende and Sandbag.
